Exhaust Gas Temperature Pulsations of a Gasoline Engine and Its Stabilization Using Thermal Energy Storage System to Reduce Emissions

Modern automotive gasoline engines have highly efficient after-treatment systems that reduce exhaust gas emissions. However, this efficiency greatly depends on the conditions of gas, mainly temperature and air–fuel ratio. The instability during transient may cause a reduction in three-way catalyst (TWC). By using thermal energy storage system before TWC, negative effect can be suppressed. In paper, effects stabilization were investigated 1-D turbocharged engine model, with focus fuel consumption (TESS) was based PCM materials built between turbine TWC to use gas. Three different picked up as possible mediums system. Based results, usage TESS has shown great potential improving efficiency. This approach assist operate under optimal drive. study, it found facilitating heat transfer significantly improve emissions’ performance by avoiding light out after cold start. H430 proved cumulative CO HC emissions 8.2% 10.6%, respectively, Although TES increases cost, result emission reductions over vehicle’s operating life.
